Newport Festivals Foundation Gala

The Breakers, Newport, RI

August 2, 2014

The Breakers.  A “Summer Cottage” that remembers the glamour and the elegance of a bygone day.  The Breakers is Newport’s Downton Abbey.  It is also the site of our gala celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival and the 55th Anniversary of the Newport Folk Festival.  What a night to be part of and to be fixed in your memory bank if you attend.

This event takes place on the evening of August 2nd and will feature fine wine, good food and a chance to see this historic American home in an intimate manner.  There will be all of this and music, featuring Wynton Marsalis, whose genius and dedication will keep jazz alive for untold generations.  In addition, Cécile McLorin Salvant will perform.  Wynton says of her, “she has poise, elegance, soul, humor, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth and grace.”  There really is not much else to say.

This annual gala is a fundraiser for the Newport Festivals Foundation, which produces both the Newport Jazz Festival & Newport Folk Festival.  Three years ago, Pete Seeger & Ramblin’ Jack Elliott appeared at the gala and this year we’ve asked the Milk Carton Kids to perform at the gala, to illustrate the relationship between the Jazz Festival and the Folk Festival.  The Milk Carton Kids are a fast-rising, folk group who will be a welcome addition to an already festive occasion.

There will be other musical surprises.  Plus, you might even get a chance to say hello to me as well as many of our board members.  If it fits into your budget, I don’t think this is something you should miss.

This is for the ardent music fan who can afford to make a contribution and take a tax deduction. The cost for the event is $600 per person, which includes all of the above and a tax deduction. If you would like to attend the Newport Jazz Festival® as part of this experience, you can ask for a “flex ticket” which can be used at Fort Adams State Park on either Saturday or Sunday. Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization, and proceeds of this evening will be used to further our mission.
